South Swell Syndicate is a surf rock reggae project founded in 2024 by Southern California native Mick Attardo, alongside Lewis Richards and musicians connected to Tribal Seeds, Long Beach Dub Allstars and Rebelution. Their sound blends genres, eras and melodic ideas while centering poetic lyrics and positive messages. Featured on their debut album, Go Where I Please, California Sun turns California’s sunny postcard image into the perfect setting for questioning the contradictions of modern society.
The song contrasts the idyllic image of California with a reality shaped by deception, inequality and survival. Lines such as “parasitic politicians” and “company CEOs” deliver a direct critique of those in power, while images of “steel coffins,” hit-and-runs and marginalized people challenge the so-called California dream.
